Mission

Empower Energy was founded to provide access to dependable and affordable electricity by developing and constructing commercially viable renewable energy projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Business Model

Empower Energy employs the independent power producer (IPP) business model to develop its renewable power projects. We identify project sites, secure permits, execute power purchase agreements, structure funding for construction, engage experienced EPC contractors to construct projects, and use the revenue from electricity sales to repay debt and pay dividends to equity investors.

Strategy

Empower Energy develops multiple projects concurrently to capture significant cost savings and create portfolios of projects that together are an investment that will be attractive to debt and equity investors.

Our Team

Our team is small so as to minimize overhead, when required we engage third party experts to support our development efforts. Over the coming year we will add to our team, which will be based in Tanzania and be made up of Tanzanians and other African nationals to the greatest extent possible. This will allow the team to be in close proximity to the projects, keep overhead low, and maximize the transfer of the knowledge and expertise necessary to develop and operate independent power producers throughout the continent.

The company’s founders have more than 15 years’ experience of developing, financing, constructing and operating energy projects . This experience is supplemented by working with our Partners which provide technical expertise and support.

Duncan MacDonald

Founder and Director

With over 20 years of experience in the power sector, including as General Manager of 3800 MW of generation capacity in Turkey, Duncan has experience through the “life-cycle” - development, construction and operation - of power projects.

Diana Mawalla

Legal Advisor

Diana is a Partner at D.K.M. Legal Consultants, which Empower Energy has retained to provide advice on corporate governance, regulation compliance and other legal matters.

Wilbert Mayila

Land Advisor

Wilbert advises on issues related to the acquisition of land titles. He is a fully Registered Land Surveyor with the National Board of Professional Surveyors (NCPS) of Tanzania and a member of the Institution of Surveyors of Tanzania.
